President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, on her victory at the 67th Grammy Awards. Tems won the Best African Music Performance category for her song ‘Love Me JeJe’ at the prestigious event held in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released a statement on Monday 3rd of January 2025, titled “President Tinubu Congratulates Tems on Grammy Award, Applauds Other Nigerian Music Stars.”

In the statement, Tinubu praised Tems for her unique artistry, which has once again brought pride to Nigeria on the global stage.

Tems latest achievement marks her second Grammy Award, further solidifying her status as a global music icon. She triumphed over strong competition, including Tomorrow by Yemi Alade, MMS by Asake featuring Wizkid, Sensational by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and Higher by Burna Boy.

President Tinubu highlighted the significance of her win, noting that it reflects the rapid rise of Nigerian music and its growing impact worldwide. He described the success of Nigerian artists as a testament to the country’s creative excellence and cultural influence.

The President commended the new generation of Nigerian artists who have propelled Afrobeats to international prominence. He acknowledged the genre’s global appeal, stating that it has become a symbol of national pride and a powerful tool for cultural expression.

“From Africa to Antarctica, Asia to Australia, Europe to the Americas, the Nigerian music industry, particularly Afrobeats, has become a source of national pride. It promotes a sense of identity and self-expression while uniting people across borders,” Tinubu stated.

Beyond celebrating Tems, Tinubu also congratulated other Nigerian artists nominated at the Grammy Awards, including Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Lojay, Davido, and Burna Boy. He praised their hard work and dedication, emphasizing that they have placed Nigeria at the forefront of global music.

He described them as ”patriots” who have contributed to the country’s international recognition in the entertainment industry. Tinubu thanked them for their role in showcasing Nigeria’s artistic talent and for promoting job creation and tourism through music.

“You are all an inspiration and role models to many young people. The nation remains deeply grateful for your contributions to music, job creation, and tourism promotion. I wish you all continued success in your musical careers,” President praised.

The rise of Afrobeats has transformed Nigeria into a powerhouse of musical innovation. With artists like Tems, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido leading the way, the genre continues to break boundaries and gain recognition on international platforms.
